PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (AP) - Potato farmers are worried about their crops as the northern part of the state experiences one of the driest summers on record.
In Aroostook County, which is experiencing a severe drought, there has been no heavy rain since before Memorial Day, potentially reducing the yield, said Don Flannery, executive director of the Maine Potato Board.
Instead, there have been scattered showers that have helped some farmers but have left others high and dry.
"I've been around the potato industry for all my life, and I don't ever remember it being this dry," Flannery said.
The National Weather Service in Caribou reports that it could end up being the driest summer since records were kept.
There's been only 4.94 inches of rain since June 1, which is about 5 inches (12.7 centimeters) below normal, said meteorologist Joe Hewitt. The driest summer on record was 5.6 inches in 1995.
Across the region, most of the potato plants look healthy because there's been enough water to keep them green. But there's not been enough water for the potatoes to grow under the surface.
Nearly a third of the acreage is irrigated, protecting them from the worst of the drought, said Dominic LaJoie, president LaJaoie Growers LLC, which has 1,600 acres (6.5 square kilometers) around Van Buren.
But it's so dry that the ponds and wells that provide water for irrigation are drying up too, LaJoie said.
And stream and river levels are also at or near record lows in the northern part of the state, Hewitt said.
Up until the 1940s, Maine was the nation's potato capital and the vast majority of farms remain in Aroostook County, a place so big it's about the same size as Connecticut and Rhode Island combined.
The number of farms has dropped because of consolidation but acreage has stabilized in recent years at about 50,000 acres (202 square kilometers).
It remains a big business - the crop typically is valued at about $150 million - with potatoes being shipped to super markets and to processing plants to be made into chips and french fries.
The prospect of a bad harvest could send ripples through the economy.
"We have so much money invested in these acres that low yields is an economic strain on any operation. If the growers are stressed on income, then so are the surrounding businesses because we don't have the money to spend in local business. It affects the whole region," LaJoie said.
The dry weather in northern Maine also stretches into New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, two potato-growing Canadian provinces.
In Mapleton, Maine, Darren Chandler is feeling the pain, too, at DC Farms, which has 600 acres (2.4 square kilometers) of potatoes. None of his fields are irrigated and some of his plants are starting to show signs of stress.
"I'm just hoping for the best. That's all you can do. You can't worry yourself sick about things you can't change," Chandler said. "That's why you've got to plan for the worst and hope for the best."
Detroit Tigers right-hander Spencer Turnbull needed a bit of wiggle room, and that's exactly what his teammates gave him with a three-run first inning.
The offense set the tone early once again for the Tigers (17-17), but it wasn't enough to carry them through Turnbull's rough five-walk outing in an 8-5 loss Wednesday against the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park.
As a whole, the pitching staff allowed 12 free passes - 10 from walks and two from hit batters. Brewers third baseman Eric Sogard drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning with a sacrifice fly against reliever Joe Jimenez. Pinch-hitter Jace Peterson's two-run homer off a hanging slider from Buck Farmer made it a three-run edge in the eighth.
All this after the Tigers opened the game by scoring three times on two infield singles and a two-run ground-rule double.
With the loss, the Tigers squandered their six-game winning streak. The Toronto Blue Jays won their game against the Miami Marlins, meaning Detroit is now 1 1/2 games back of the AL's eighth and final playoff spot.
As the postseason race continues, Detroit turns its attention to a five-game series with the Minnesota Twins at Target Field. After an off-day Thursday, left-hander Matthew Boyd starts Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader.

The third inning wasn't kind to Turnbull, You may need: Launch diagnostic code reader. who started the frame by retiring Orlando Arcia on the first pitch. He followed with two walks and a three-run blast. Keston Hiura's homer was the first Turnbull had allowed since Sept. 12, 2019, halting a streak of nine consecutive starts without allowing a long ball.
Before then, Turnbull was cruising through two innings with three strikeouts.
He picked up the pace again in the fourth frame but couldn't get through the fifth. He sandwiched a strikeout of Hirua between walks to Christian Yelich and Justin Smoak before manager Ron Gardenhire replaced him.
On nine days rest, righty John Schreiber couldn't work out of the jam. He walked one and gave up a broken-bat single to Omar Narvaez, which tied the game at five.
Turnbull finished with five runs on three hits and five walks. He struck out five batters over 89 pitches.

Designated hitter Miguel Cabrera jump-started the fifth inning with a double to the wall in left-center field and moved ahead in the record books once again.
After reaching 2,000 hits with the Tigers' organization Saturday, he recorded his 2,845th career hit to move him past Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez for 49th in MLB history. Since it was a double, Cabrera jumped ahead of Carlos Beltran and Cal Ripken Jr. for 24th in extra-base hits with 1,079.
Cabrera finished 1-for-4 with one run scored and one strikeout.
Making his third start at shortstop this season, Castro fielded what should've been a routine groundball from Avisail Garcia in the second inning and tossed the ball over first baseman Jeimer Candelario's head. But Castro didn't let his error define him. He responded at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance and two RBIs.
Gardenhire started Castro over regular shortstop Niko Goodrum, who is hitting .6 this season. In his last seven games, Goodrum is 6-for-27 with nine strikeouts and one walk.
Castro is also working on a transition to the outfield, where he will be used as a utility player going forward. Although Goodrum has outfield experience, Gardenhire said he would rather keep the tandem of Goodrum and second baseman Jonathan Schoop up the middle for defensive purposes.
"If we were losing ballgames and going through that, it might make a difference," Gardenhire said Tuesday. "But we're winning ballgames with that combo up the middle, and I'm really happy with that part of it."
It's only Week 3, but for theDetroit Lions, there's no minimizing the importance of Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals.
"I would say it's a must-win," running back Adrian Peterson said of the 4:25 p.m. road matchup.
The Lions are 0-2 for the second time in three seasons under Matt Patricia and the fourth time in the last 10 years.
Teams that start 0-2 have made the playoffs just 12% of the time since the NFL went to a 12-team postseason in 1990.
For teams that start 0-3, the odds are even worse. In the last 30 years, just four teams have made the postseason after opening with three straight losses: The 20 Houston Texans, 1998 Buffalo Bills, 1992 San Diego Chargers and 1995 Lions.

Even with an expanded 14-team playoff in place this season, a loss Sunday would give the Lions, with a coach and a general manager on the hot seat, You may also like: diagnostic scanner. a virtual death sentence.
"We're not focused on the playoffs," Lions receiver Danny Amendola said. "We're focused on the Cardinals."
For good reason.
Though they have not had a winning record since 2015, the Cardinals are one of the "it" teams in the NFL this year. They put up a combined 54 points in season-opening wins over the San Francisco 49ers and Washington - two of the best defensive teams in the NFL - and quarterback Kyler Murray is looking to follow in the footsteps of Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson as a second-year league MVP.
[ Mailbag: Does team clean house at bye week? Are the Lions changing radio homes? ]
Murray leads the Cardinals and ranks ninth in the NFL with 158 yards rushing and three touchdowns through two games. His 674 total yards from scrimmage (passing and rushing) are on pace to surpass Mahomes' MVP campaign of 20 (5,369 total yards).
"He's incredible, man," said Peterson, who like Murray, played his college football at Oklahoma. "Pretty much that's what we do, Sooner Nation. We produce the best, normally. But that kid right there, man - from coming out of high school he got drafted to go play baseball and was making a couple million while he was in college, so that just goes to show what type of athlete he is in general. But you think about the quarterback position and what he was able to accomplish at the University of Oklahoma, and what he has done so far in the league, he's a dynamic player."
Murray made his NFL debut against the Lions last season and has been on a rocket ride ever since.
He engineered an -point comeback against the Lions, throwing for 154 yards in the fourth quarter of what finished as a tie game, and was named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year thanks to a steady stream of highlight plays.
[Ex-Detroit Lions sack leader Devon Kennard 'excited' to face former team ]
The Cardinals upgraded Murray's supporting cast this offseason by trading for All-Pro receiver DeAndre Hopkins, and Murray has naturally matured as a playmaker. He's completing 67% of his passes, up from 64% as a rookie, and while sacks (five) and turnovers (two) have been an issue, he's more comfortable running the ball than he was at any point last year.
"I think this guy got faster and quicker and more explosive in the offseason," Patricia said. "It's just amazing to watch him in open space. He's a smooth athlete. He can really get to top-end acceleration extremely quick, and I think that's what catches a lot of people by surprise. He can just burst and explode and within two steps he's at full speed, and then he can stop within a step or two. And I think some of that for the quarterback position, you're not necessarily used to it. It's almost like trying to tackle a punt returner in those sort of space plays that he's able to create."
The Lions are off to an atrocious start defensively. They rank last in the league against the run and 25th in sacks per pass attempt, and Murray's mobility will challenge them in a plethora of ways.

UPDATE: Eastern Market Brewing Co. has stopped sales and production of "Same Old Lager." Read the full update here.
Eastern Market Brewing Co. probably couldn't have picked a better (or worse?) weekend to launch a beer in tribute of the Detroit Lions - and Lions legend Barry Sanders is not happy with it.
The Lions are coming off an embarrassing 20-0 loss to the shorthanded Carolina Panthers, their first shutout loss in more than a decade. They're now 4-6, destined to miss the postseason and potentially a regime change. All of that has fans fired up for change heading into Thanksgiving against the Houston Texans.
Enter Eastern Market Brewing Co., which has been debuting new and tasty beers left and right from its Detroit location and its Ferndale Project taproom this year. Going into the Lions-Panthers game Sunday, it announced a new beer release: "Same Old Lager," a crisp, 4.5% alcohol-by-volume lager that has one simple request: "Don't set your expectations too high."
The can label has an 8-bit version of what looks like Lions legend Barry Sanders on the label with a Tecmo Bowl football field backdrop. "This classic American lager is exactly what you'd expect," the description reads. "Light, crisp, and always leaves you wanting more. Just keep telling yourself 'the Next Beer, will be The Beer.'"
Get it? It's a play on both the Lions fan's sense of false hope every year and also the reputation of the lager in the craft beer community: Crisp and clean, but lacking in bold flavor unlike other popular styles such as IPA, stout and wheat ale. Still, lagers have a valuable place in the beer portfolio, just like the lovable (?) Lions do in our hearts.

That said, Sanders made it clear: He is not at all involved with Eastern Market Brewing Co. in launching this beer. He took to Twitter Monday to express disappointment and indicated he would pursue legal action against Eastern Market Brewing Co.
"I have no affiliation with this company, and they are using my image without any permission," he said. "My legal team is working through the process to shut this down ASAP. Apologies to any fans that were duped."

Though Sanders is not named on the label or in the marketing of the beer, the Lions player on the label is wearing Sanders' No. 20 and appears to be an 8-bit version of him.
Eastern Market Brewing Co. has since said it would cease sales and production of "Same Old Lager."
